Specialty Classes

Tiny Tot Pommers Recommended for ages 6-9. Students will learn the basics of pom and jazz dance including basic arm movements, leaps, jumps, turns and rhythm skills. Class will consist of a warm up, flexibility training, technique and age-appropriate combinations. The Tiny Tot Pommers will also have an opportunity to do extra performances throughout the community.

Hip Hop (levels 1, 2, &3) Students will learn jumps, leaps, turns and stalls that incorporate the current, hot hip hop style. Class will consist of a warm up, stretch, basic technique and stylized, age-appropriate combinations.

Preparation for Junior High/High Cheerleading Learn the essentials of cheering, chanting, dance, stunting and tumbling from a former Varsity Troy Buchanan Cheerleader. Skills that will be expected to be completed at try-outs will be covered and perfected in classes.

Preparation for Jr. High/High School Dance Team Learn the technical skills (leaps, jumps and turns) necessary to excel on a school dance team. This class is taught by an "All-Star" member of the St. Dominic High School varsity dance team.

Lyrical ( levels 1, 2, 3 & Accelerated) Lyrical is a combination of ballet and jazz with emotional style. Lyrical dance students will learn technique, but mostly learn combinations which challenge style and performance skills. Students must be enrolled in at least one ballet class weekly to take lyrical. Jazz class is also recommended.

Leaps & Turns is a skills class focusing on turning and leaping technique. This class is very important for our competition dancers and for anyone wanting to tryout for middle school or high school dance team.

Modern/Contemporary is a new class to MDE this year. This is an interpretative style of dance which focuses on strengthening a dancer’s core and increasing range of motion.

Christian Dance students will follow a similar format as jazz and lyrical classes, but also study bible verses and dance to some of the hottest Christian music. All levels and ages welcome!

Triple Threat new to MDE summer 2006, triple threat is a combination class of singing, acting and dancing. This is a great class if you have a future in show choir or would like to see what it would be like to be an actress on Broadway! Formerly called musical theater, students will also take part in performing musicals. MDE students have performed the Wizard of Oz and are currently in production for Annie.

Circus Arts Circus Arts blends tumbling, dance, stunts and juggling in a theatrical form. Students will have the opportunity to perform throughout the community. Circus Arts will be taught by Joelle Staley of the Staley Family Circus. See Miss Joelle for specific dress code requirements.

Baton Twirling students will learn basic tosses, full hand twirling and rolls while combining flexibility training and dance skills. Students will have the opportunity to perform and compete in groups or as soloists. Baton twirling is taught by Julie Stewart, a former world baton twirling champion.
